Letters To The Editor

A letter to Government

Growing up on this island I have seen many things, but recently they have not been beautiful.  With seven unsolved murders and growing tension, Bermuda is quickly slipping from its place in paradise.  Why has the government not taken action and prevented this?  We live in a small community, and the violence should be manageable.  Please, I do not want my children to grow up in a community where kids cannot play outdoors.  You, the entire government, need to step forward and take responsibility.

A letter against Racism

Dear Editor,

Racism is everywhere on this island.  Turn on the radio, and “folks” are classified as white or black, but never are addressed together.  Every time I turn on the radio I do not need to be reminded that I am white, and that many of my best friends are black.  Every time I turn on the radio, I do not need to be reminded of the hate that exists between the different races for reasons I do not understand.

Harping on about the issue of racism, which is often done via the radio, does not alleviate the issue.  Instead, progressive steps within society and each individual need to be made or we’re back to where we years ago.  A standstill is no longer acceptable.

A letter demanding honest sexuality

To the Editor,

There was quite an ironic situation in your last paper.  There was a two page spread of sexy “pop icons.”  The next page contained rational advice about sex.  These pop icons are a gross misrepresentation of real life sexuality.  At first a girl can be captivated by Justin Timberlake’s abs.  However, people begin to feeling that those abs belong more to some guy who spent days using Adobe Photoshop than to Justin.  In reality, sex is very rarely sexy.  It often leads to awkward situations or hearts that have been ripped in two.  So next time please show us icons that carry themselves honestly.

A Letter requesting teachers to behave

Teachers are having a bit too much fun with their e-mail.  At my school incidents have taken place involving teachers aimlessly e-mailing at the expense of students.  One such discourse went exactly as follows:

“Get out the tranquillizer gun, the beasts are loose!” (This statement was made in references to two students in the hallway)

“Can’t we use something bigger than a tranquillizer gun? A canon perhaps”

You can make whatever judgments you want from those two e-mail messages, yet the fact stands that this unnecessary e-mailing is detracting from our learning time.  More and more kids are being sent away to boarding school, and the reason is obvious.  Bermudian schools just no longer meet the global standard.  Fewer and fewer students are going to the big name universities, in fact, fewer students are attending college in general.

Familes pay upwards of $10,000 dollars a year for their child’s education. This comes to $130,000 for that child’s total time at private school. Fantastic results should be delivered!  A fresh breath of air needs to re-inflate the Bermudian educational system, and the teachers need to help start the CPR.
