Sibling Rivalry
Sibling rivalry by Caitlin Collis
“It’s all her fault!” “She started it!”
Whether we are competing for the front seat of the car or our parent’s attention and praise, my brother and I are constantly bickering, squabbling and irritating eachother. A simple dispute has often ended with slammed doors, silent treatments and sheer frustration. In the heat of the battle, however, it is hard to “just ignore him” or “walk away and count to ten”, popular pieces of advice given by agitated parents.
As we are together almost all of the time, we are quick to become aggravated and to develop pet peeves. With our personal space and belongings being with one another’s gasp, it is easy to feel as if we have no privacy and as soon as one of us is punished, the other is always there to rub it in. It’s like an endless game you advance and score a point when the other sibling gets in trouble, only encouraging them to get back at you and even the score.
While we may quarrel and get on one another’s nerves, my brother and I have an impenetrable and special friendship. We laugh at each other’s pathetic jokes, we give each other advice and we are always there for one another.
